New Delhi, August 22: On Friday night, Indian sports enthusiasts turned their attention to the javelin event in Lausanne, Switzerland. Fans were hopeful that Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra would secure first place this time. Although Neeraj performed well, he could not clinch the top spot. Sri Lanka’s Rumes Tharanga Pathirage, who has emerged as Neeraj’s toughest competitor recently, took first place.
In the Lausanne Diamond League, the 28-year-old Neeraj threw a distance of 88.05 meters. It was anticipated that this would be the best throw of the event, potentially securing him first place. However, Rumes Tharanga Pathirage, a 23-year-old javelin thrower, had other plans. He achieved a throw of 88.14 meters, surpassing Neeraj’s throw by 9 centimeters. Neeraj could not respond effectively in his subsequent attempts and ultimately had to settle for second place. Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished third with a throw of 86.69 meters.
This marks the third consecutive occasion that Pathirage has pushed Neeraj Chopra to second place. Recently, at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Pathirage outperformed Neeraj to claim the gold medal, leaving Neeraj in second. Prior to the Commonwealth Games, in June, Pathirage also bested Neeraj at the Doha Diamond League, securing first place again.
Neeraj Chopra made history by winning the gold medal in javelin at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. At that time, it was believed that he would face little challenge. However, during the Paris 2024 Olympics, Neeraj encountered competition from Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who won gold, while Neeraj had to settle for silver.
Since 2024, Arshad Nadeem’s performance has significantly declined, while Neeraj has struggled with injuries, affecting his performance as well. Nevertheless, whenever Neeraj has attempted to regain his dominance in javelin, he has found himself up against Pathirage. Despite being five years younger and having fewer resources, Pathirage’s energy and enthusiasm have proven to be a challenge for Neeraj in their last three encounters. Pathirage is now being regarded as the next big name in world javelin. Neeraj will need to find a way to overcome Pathirage’s challenge to maintain his dominance in javelin.
