Noida, 10 December: After enduring severe pollution for eight consecutive days, the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced a slight improvement in air quality on Tuesday due to stronger winds that helped disperse the pollution.
In areas of Noida, Ghaziabad, and Delhi, the Air Quality Index (AQI) fluctuated between the ‘Orange’ and ‘Red’ categories. Experts have described this as a temporary relief. In Noida, PM2.5 levels declined, with several monitoring stations recording readings in the Orange category. According to pollution control board data, the AQI remained in the Red category continuously for eight days since the start of December 2025.
On 1 December, Noida recorded a PM2.5 level of 321, which rose to 395 on 2 December and 365 on 3 December. Most days until 6 December saw PM2.5 levels above 300. On 9 December, a decline was seen for the first time with PM2.5 levels dropping to 285, placing it in the Orange category.
Regarding Wednesday’s AQI in Noida, Sector-125 registered 296, Sector-62 recorded 236, and Sector-116 showed 294. This indicates that most stations moved from extremely poor to poor air quality, offering some relief compared to the previous eight days. Ghaziabad also showed improvement, though Loni remained in the Red zone with an AQI of 319.
In Ghaziabad, Indirapuram’s AQI stood at 249 and Sanjay Nagar at 231, while Loni continued to face severe pollution. Several monitoring stations in Delhi were also in the Orange zone. Delhi saw a decline in pollution levels with Alipur at 263, Anand Vihar at 297, Ashok Vihar at 287, Aya Nagar at 183, but Bawana remained in a critical state with an AQI of 320.
The Meteorological Department has forecast a drop in temperature to around 7 degrees Celsius, signalling the start of a cold wave. According to the India Meteorological Department, changes in wind direction and speed are likely to cause light fog and a further drop in temperatures over the coming days.
From 10 to 12 December, maximum temperatures in Noida and Ghaziabad are expected to remain between 23 and 24 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures ranging from 7 to 9 degrees Celsius. A cold wave alert may be issued soon. Despite the improvement in AQI, air quality is still classified as ‘poor’. According to reports, “The air is poor and prolonged exposure may cause breathing difficulties.”
