Bhopal, April 21: A significant national conference was held in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, focusing on the potential applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the criminal justice system. The event was organized by the Bureau of Police Research and Development in collaboration with the Central Police Training Academy and the National Judicial Academy.
Over 170 experts from the judiciary, police, forensics, and prison administration participated in this conference. The primary aim was to explore how new technologies can enhance the justice system.
The conference was inaugurated by Justice Aniruddha Bose, Director of the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal, and Alok Ranjan, Director General of NCRB and BPR&D from New Delhi. Discussions centered around the growing role of AI in five key areas of the criminal justice system: judiciary, police, prosecution, forensics, and correctional administration. The need for balanced and responsible use of AI was emphasized.
Participants also addressed major challenges such as algorithmic bias, false positives, and excessive reliance on automated systems. The discussions included India’s legal and institutional responses, including AI initiatives from the Supreme Court and guidelines issued by various High Courts for regulating the use of generative AI.
Concerns regarding the admissibility of AI-generated evidence, issues related to deepfakes, and the necessity of maintaining the authenticity of electronic evidence were highlighted. Ethical considerations surrounding privacy, surveillance, and human rights were also specifically underscored.
Experts concluded that while AI serves as a crucial ‘force multiplier’ in the criminal justice system, its effective use requires capacity building, clear standard operating procedures, and human oversight to ensure transparency, accountability, and legal validity.
Potential areas for AI application in each sector of the criminal justice system were identified, leading to the development of a solid roadmap for its swift and effective implementation.
