New Delhi, March 19: The IPL 2026 season is set to kick off on March 28, but the Chennai Super Kings are already facing significant challenges. Fast bowler Nathan Ellis may be sidelined for the entire tournament due to an injury.
Ellis is currently struggling with a hamstring injury. K.S. Viswanathan, CEO of Chennai Super Kings, spoke to reporters and indicated that it seems unlikely for Ellis to recover in time. The Australian fast bowler was acquired by Chennai for ₹2 crore during the IPL 2026 auction. If Ellis is unable to participate, it would be a major setback for the team, which is already facing a weakened fast bowling attack this season.
Chennai’s pace attack is noticeably lacking in experience. The team currently has Khalil Ahmed, Mukesh Choudhary, Anshul Kamboj, and Gurjapani Singh as fast bowlers, but there is no seasoned bowler among them. Additionally, the options for bowling in the final overs appear limited. The only foreign bowler in the squad is Matt Henry. Notably, the team did not retain their main fast bowler, Pathirana, before the auction.
Chennai Super Kings had a disappointing performance in IPL 2025, winning only 4 out of 14 matches under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, while suffering losses in 10 games. They finished at the bottom of the points table. However, with the addition of Sanju Samson, Chennai’s batting lineup looks stronger this time. Samson and Ayush Mhatre are expected to open the innings, while the middle order boasts powerful batsmen like Dewald Brevis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Urvil Patel, Sarfaraz Khan, Shivam Dube, and MS Dhoni.
