Nagaland Launches District School Leaders Community to Enhance Education Reform

Kohima, March 24: The Nagaland government has launched the ‘District School and System Leaders Professional Learning Community’ (DSSL PLC) on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards strengthening the state’s education system.

Kehriehlau Yom, advisor for school education and SCERT, emphasized that a robust education system relies on three pillars: school leadership, curriculum, and administration. He highlighted the need to address challenges such as infrastructure deficits, connectivity issues, human resource shortages, and grassroots obstacles.

Yom underscored the importance of restoring public trust in government schools, stating that initiatives like this will make the education system more accountable and effective.

A baseline survey has been conducted in 249 schools, and a pilot for the School Quality Assessment and Accreditation Framework (SQAFF) has been initiated to assess the current situation and plan for the future. Efforts are also underway to align reforms with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020).

Benjung Yaden, Deputy Director of SCERT Nagaland, highlighted the progress of the School Leadership Development Program (SLDP), which aims to strengthen leadership capacity in schools and improve learning outcomes.

As part of this program, a one-month certificate course and other short-term training sessions are being organized for school heads and senior teachers. These include modules tailored to local needs, research activities, and documentation of best practices.

School Education Secretary Mathatung Tungo stated that innovation is essential in the changing educational landscape, and excellence in education is a collective responsibility.

Meanwhile, Shashank Pratap Singh, Principal Director of School Education, noted that nearly 385 educational leaders have already received training. He mentioned that teacher training has been made mandatory under NEP-2020, and the role of school heads is crucial in ensuring accountability.

He also suggested that teachers should receive training before promotions to foster professional development.

According to officials, this initiative will promote collaboration, innovation, and better administration in the education sector, ultimately improving the quality of education in the state.
