Mumbai, May 1: The Missing Link Tunnel Project of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been officially recorded in the Guinness World Records. This project is recognized as one of India’s most modern and secure road developments. It allows vehicles to travel safely at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, making journeys smoother and more comfortable.
Designed with safety as a priority, the project aims to minimize the risk of accidents, earning it the designation of a Zero Fatality Corridor.
Travel time is expected to decrease by approximately 30 minutes, with an estimated daily fuel savings of around ₹90 million. The project includes advanced air quality control and emergency safety measures, featuring systems for calling for help and public announcement facilities.
Fire safety in the tunnels is enhanced with advanced systems, and a special mechanism has been implemented to control airflow. Additionally, smart traffic monitoring systems have been established to ensure continuous oversight along the route.
The project extends from the Khopoli exit to the Lonavala area, including an eight-lane expansion of the Khalapur-Khopoli section. The total cost of the project exceeds ₹6,695 crore. A notable feature is the country’s tallest cable-stayed bridge in the Tiger Valley area, standing at approximately 182 meters.
The route incorporates several tunnels and bridges, with one major tunnel measuring about 8.87 kilometers and another approximately 1.68 kilometers long. Emergency exits have been strategically placed every few hundred meters to ensure safe evacuation in any situation.
With the new route, the previous journey through the ghats, which was about 19 kilometers, has been reduced by approximately 6 kilometers, making travel faster and more convenient.
