Mumbai, 18 August (Kiran News): Continuous heavy rainfall for the third consecutive day has disrupted daily life in Mumbai on Monday. The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall over the next 72 hours, prompting the administration to urge citizens to leave their homes only for essential work. The downpour has also affected Mumbai’s lifeline—the local train service—with trains running late.

Heavy rain has been lashing Mumbai and its western suburbs since morning. Areas including Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, Dahisar, Vile Parle, Santacruz, and Bandra are experiencing intense rainfall. As a result, low-lying areas in the western suburbs are waterlogged. Other areas such as Wadala, Kurla, Dadar, Lalbaug, King Circle, and Sion are also witnessing water accumulation. The Andheri and Milan subways are completely filled with rainwater. Municipal workers are using pumps to drain the water from all these locations. In view of the heavy rainfall, several manholes have been opened for faster drainage.
According to the India Meteorological Department, in the past 12 hours, rainfall was recorded as follows: Tata Power Chembur—81.5 mm, Santacruz—70 mm, Vikhroli—69 mm, Sion—67 mm, Juhu—58 mm, Byculla—58 mm, Bandra—54 mm, and Colaba—22 mm. Due to the ongoing rain since Thursday night, the catchment areas of Mumbai’s water-supplying dams have seen increased water levels. Currently, the dams have reached 90 percent of their capacity, ensuring enough water supply for the city for a year. Mumbai receives 3,900 million litres of water daily from the Upper Vaitarna, Modaksagar, Tansa, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi dams. The combined storage capacity of all seven dams is 14.47 lakh million litres, of which 13 lakh million litres is now filled.
