Bhopal, December 1 – The Madhya Pradesh Assembly’s winter session began on Monday with dramatic scenes as Congress MLAs staged a unique protest over children’s deaths caused by consuming fruit syrup in Chhindwara district and other issues related to child safety in the state.
Led by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, Congress legislators arrived at the assembly premises carrying dolls representing children who died after consuming cough syrup. The protest highlighted rising atrocities against children in the state and alleged government negligence in healthcare matters.
In a symbolic demonstration, Congress MLAs brought child dolls to represent the innocent victims. One female Congress MLA appeared dressed as ‘Putana’ (a demoness from Hindu mythology), which was described as a symbolic representation of the BJP government’s policies and negligence towards children’s welfare.
Speaking during the protest, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar said, “The government is not sensitive even in matters concerning children. In Chhindwara, the lamps of several families have been extinguished forever and mothers’ laps have become empty, but the government, which has become like Putana, doesn’t even have time to review the Health Department’s responsibilities.”
Singhar accused the government of poor hospital management, stating that the situation in hospitals is so bad that even rats bite children. He alleged that the government is continuously avoiding discussing this issue, providing answers, and fixing responsibility.
The Opposition leader further stated that this is not just one incident, but raises serious questions about child safety, healthcare systems, and the government’s priorities in the state. “The public wants to know why the government remains silent even when innocent lives are at stake,” he said.
Congress MLAs made it clear that the BJP government’s negligence has become unbearable. They emphasized that when the question involves innocent children’s lives, the opposition will not remain silent.
The winter session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly commenced amid this controversy, with Congress legislators taking an aggressive stance from the very first day against what they termed as systematic failures in child healthcare and safety measures.
