Moscow Gears Up for Ramayana Performance as Russian Artists Embrace Indian Culture

Russian artists prepare for a Ramayana performance in Moscow, showcasing a cultural exchange between India and Russia.

Moscow, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : The excitement surrounding Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya is resonating far beyond the banks of the Sarayu River. Moscow is set to join the celebrations with a performance of the Ramayana, featuring a dedicated team of 16 Russian artists who will bring the epic’s characters to life on stage.

In a unique cultural exchange, costumes for the performance have been sourced from Chandni Chowk in Delhi, reflecting the rich Indian heritage. This collaboration between Indian tradition and Russian artistry is enhancing Ayodhya’s cultural prominence on an international scale. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Ayodhya’s Deepotsav and related events have gained global attention.

Dr. Rameshwar Singh, the producer and director of the Moscow Ramayana performance, noted that the international stature of the Ramayana has grown significantly since Yogi Adityanath took office. He emphasized that this performance not only strengthens ties between India and Russia but also serves as a platform for cultural exchange and artistic expression.

The connection between Russian artists and the Ramayana began in November 2018 with the first presentation of “Disha Ramleela” in Ayodhya. This event marked a significant milestone in the interaction between Russian performers and the cultural atmosphere of Ayodhya. The narrative of Lord Ram presented by foreign artists adds a unique dimension to this cultural journey. The following January, “Disha Ramleela” was showcased at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, further enhancing the cultural dialogue between the two nations.

Through the Ramleela, a dialogue emerges between Indian religious traditions and theatrical expression. The performances have been integrated into Ayodhya’s Deepotsav celebrations, a major festival commemorating Lord Ram’s return. The participation of Russian artists has fostered cultural exchange between India and Russia. The Ramleela’s narrative is deeply embedded in Indian society, yet its staging transcends geographical boundaries.

When foreign artists portray the characters of the Ramayana, they connect with Indian literature, tradition, and theatrical expression. The preparation of the 16-member Russian team in Moscow is a testament to this cultural exchange. According to Dr. Rameshwar Singh, such performances strengthen the bonds between the two countries.

This event highlights Ayodhya’s cultural identity alongside the involvement of Russian artists. The Ramleela is becoming not just a presentation of the story but also a medium for dialogue between diverse cultures. The “Disha Ramleela” continues the legacy of the great artist Gennadi Mikhailovich Pechanikov, affectionately known as the “Russian Ram,” who significantly contributed to popularizing the Ramleela among Russian audiences.

The roles in the performance will include:
1) Ram – Alexi
2) Sita – Dasha
3) Lakshman – Oleg
4) Hanuman – Dmitry
5) Bharat – Evgeny
6) Ravana – Sergei
7) Dasharath – Arti
