Monsoon Update: Heavy Rain, Thunderstorm Alert Issued for Several Districts in Madhya Pradesh

June 9, 2025 by Kuldeep Singh Chundawat

Monsoon
New Delhi:
As scorching temperatures continue to grip most parts of Madhya Pradesh, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert. While the monsoon’s official arrival in the state is still a few days away, signs of weather change have begun to emerge. Several districts are now under a rain and thunderstorm warning as pre-monsoon activity picks up.

Heatwave Intensifies Across Madhya Pradesh

Over the past two days, temperatures across Madhya Pradesh have soared, with many regions recording highs above 44°C. The intense heat has caused widespread discomfort and increased the likelihood of heat-related illnesses. On Sunday, Chhatarpur reported the highest temperature in the state at 44.8°C, closely followed by Tikamgarh (43.7°C) and Khajuraho-Shivpuri (43.6°C).

Other districts reporting extreme heat include Shivpuri and Sagar (43°C), Satna (42.7°C), Damoh (42.5°C), and Rewa (42.4°C). Major cities weren’t spared either, with Gwalior topping the urban heat charts at 43.4°C. Cities like Sidhi, Umaria, Mandla, and Seoni also witnessed temperatures above 40°C, marking a significant surge in heat across the state.

Pre-Monsoon Showers Forecast for Southern MP

Despite the prevailing heatwave, the IMD has issued rain and thunderstorm warnings for multiple districts. The shift in weather conditions is attributed to three active cyclonic circulation systems affecting the region.

According to forecasts, Alirajpur, Barwani, Khargone, Khandwa, and Burhanpur are expected to receive rain accompanied by thunder and lightning on Monday. In addition, Betul, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni, Mandla, and Balaghat are also under alert for similar weather activity. Residents in these areas are advised to stay cautious and monitor local weather updates.

Monsoon Likely to Enter Madhya Pradesh by June 15

The much-awaited southwest monsoon has currently stalled over parts of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, causing a delay in its entry into Madhya Pradesh. Meteorologists expect the monsoon to begin advancing again within the next 2 to 3 days, paving the way for its arrival in MP by June 15 or 16.

Despite the brief delay, this year’s monsoon is projected to bring normal to above-normal rainfall to the state, offering relief from the intense summer and supporting crucial agricultural activities.

What to Expect in the Coming Days

As the state braces for monsoon onset, the immediate focus remains on managing the heatwave and monitoring early weather disturbances. Authorities have been urged to prepare for potential thunderstorms and ensure public safety, especially in districts under alert.

Citizens are advised to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, and follow official weather advisories closely.
