Aizawl, August 17: Mizoram’s Governor, General VK Singh (Retd.), recently highlighted the newly inaugurated Bairabi–Sairang railway line as a potential game changer for the state. He emphasized its proposed extension to Zorinpui and the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project as key infrastructure initiatives that could significantly enhance connectivity, trade, and economic opportunities in Mizoram.
The 51.38-kilometer railway line, connecting Bairabi in southern Assam to Sairang near Aizawl, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025. Plans are in place to extend this railway project over 200 kilometers further south to Zorinpui.
This extension will link with the Kaladan project, which aims to establish connectivity to Paletwa in Myanmar and the Sittwe port. Addressing an event in Aizawl, the Governor stressed the importance of preparing in advance to ensure that the people of Mizoram fully benefit from these development projects.
Discussing the state’s tourism potential, he stated, “Our beautiful landscapes, rich culture, music, cuisine, and warm hospitality have immense potential to attract tourists. We need to improve facilities, maintain clean and attractive cities, and ensure trained hospitality staff, guides, homestays, and quality local products.”
The Governor also highlighted the necessity of establishing strong market connections to enable agricultural products, processed foods, handicrafts, handloom products, and other local goods to reach markets across India. “We need to create a complete ecosystem for this,” he added.
General Singh called for a shift in mindset, urging the talented and hardworking youth of Mizoram to prepare themselves for competition at national and global levels. He emphasized the importance of encouraging and supporting youth to pursue careers in civil services, IITs, IIMs, medical institutions, universities, defense services, scholarships, and emerging new professions.
He stated, “Our youth should have the confidence to compete and succeed outside, bringing their knowledge and experience back to Mizoram.” However, General Singh cautioned that development should not come at the cost of Mizoram’s unique identity. He said, “Our culture, community spirit, environment, and social values are invaluable assets that we must preserve.”
The event was attended by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, and other dignitaries, including the Speaker of the State Assembly, Lalbiakzama.
