New Delhi, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : Captain Smita Machhar, an Indian pilot, is being honored for his extraordinary bravery after saving over 170 lives during a recent flight incident. The Israeli government has announced that he will receive the prestigious Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism. In addition, the U.S. House of Representatives will recognize his courage in their official Congressional Record.
This announcement was made by the Israeli Embassy in India via a social media post, detailing the statement from Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The post praised Captain Machhar’s valor, stating, “His bravery helped avert a major tragedy. After his recovery, President Herzog will present him with the award. We wish him a swift and complete recovery. Thank you, Captain. Israel salutes your courage.”
On the U.S. side, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, of Indian descent, announced that he would submit a statement to the Congressional Record honoring Captain Machhar’s heroism. He also urged his fellow lawmakers to join in recognizing the pilot’s bravery.
The honors stem from a harrowing incident on September 30, when Flydubai Flight FZ 1073 was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. During the flight, the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machhar with an axe and attempted to seize control of the aircraft.
According to Congressman Krishnamoorthi, the plane rapidly descended about 16,000 feet within just 30 seconds during the attack. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Captain Machhar managed to reach the cockpit door and successfully opened it. This brave action allowed other crew members to intervene and subdue the assailant.
Following this, two reserve pilots on board took over the flight and safely landed it in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The plane carried 172 passengers, including four American citizens and 27 children.
Captain Smita Machhar has 17 years of flying experience, with 11 years as a captain. Krishnamoorthi highlighted that despite facing a life-threatening attack, Captain Machhar prioritized the safety of everyone on board. Even while struggling for his own safety, he understood that the lives of all those aboard depended on his next actions.
His quick thinking, determination, and courage provided the passengers and crew with the opportunity to respond effectively, preventing a potential disaster. The Congressman also acknowledged the families of those who were safely rescued in this incident, emphasizing the profound impact of Captain Machhar’s actions.
“Every individual on Flight FZ 1073 has a family that was spared unimaginable grief. Captain Machhar’s resilience ensured that the passengers and crew could return safely to their loved ones,” he said.
