New Delhi, August 25: Following the controversy involving Brydon Carse and his drinking incident, former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has demanded a punishment that would send shivers through the entire England cricket team.
Vaughan stated, “Someone should receive a punishment that makes the whole England cricket team shudder, so everyone understands that if you misbehave or bring disgrace to this team, you know what to expect. This is the only punishment that will genuinely hurt the players.”
The former captain expressed concern that if Carse is made an example after last year’s incidents, he would feel sorry for him. “I hope Carse is receiving good support around him. He is a character who can endure a lot if given a little leeway. He needs people around him who can provide better advice.”
Vaughan added, “If Carse is held accountable for what has transpired over the past nine months, I would be saddened. However, somehow, something must be done to set a precedent that such behavior will no longer be tolerated.”
Carse was part of the England team for two out of three Test matches against Pakistan at home but was released to play for Durham in the County Championship after not being selected for the first match in Leeds.
After the domestic team’s victory, a viral video showed Carse being handcuffed by police outside a nightclub. He was briefly arrested. Following the incident, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) initiated an investigation.
Carse’s case is the latest in a series of nightclub incidents involving England cricket. Last October, England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook was punched by a bouncer outside a nightclub in Wellington, New Zealand, where teammates Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were also present. During the Ashes tour in Australia, opener Ben Duckett was filmed intoxicated while on holiday in Noosa. In June, former Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson broke team curfew and were present when a member of England’s security staff was punched by a Saracens rugby player at a London nightclub.
The ECB has announced that the fast bowler will not be available for selection for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s on Thursday. Hampshire’s right-arm fast bowler Sonny Baker will replace him in the team.
