Guadalajara, March 7: Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday that approximately 100,000 security personnel will be deployed to ensure public safety during this year’s FIFA World Cup.
During a press conference in the capital of Jalisco state, Sheinbaum stated, “As you can see, we are ready for the World Cup.”
She emphasized, “We have come here to tell the people of Jalisco that we stand together. We are working for the peace, security, and well-being of the people in this beautiful state.”
According to Xinhua, this announcement follows a surge in violence nationwide after the death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes during an army operation last month.
Following the death of “El Mencho” on February 22, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which he once led, engaged in gunfire with the Mexican army, blocked roads, and set vehicles on fire. Over 12,000 individuals are reported missing in Guadalajara.
The security plan includes 20,000 soldiers, 55,000 police officers, and members from private security firms. Officials stated they will be supported by 2,500 military and civilian vehicles, 24 aircraft, anti-drone systems, and specially trained detection dogs.
General Roman Villalvazo has been tasked with overseeing security operations.
He remarked, “The first challenge is to present a reliable, safe, and well-organized Mexico to the international community. The second is for the Mexican government to have the capacity to face those threats to national security.”
Villalvazo noted that Mexican security forces began specialized training in January, with plans to accelerate efforts in the coming weeks.
Mexico will co-host the World Cup with the United States and Canada from June 11 to July 19. Thirteen matches will be held in Mexico, including five in Mexico City, four in Guadalajara, and four in Monterrey.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed full confidence in Mexico’s ability to host the tournament last week.
