Kolkata, February 27: The family of Pulak Halder, a final-year student at Kalyani Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital and Medical College in Nadia district, West Bengal, claims he was murdered. His decomposed body was discovered in his hostel room.
The investigating officer stated that an autopsy on the medical student’s body will be conducted on Friday, which will help determine the cause of death.
According to the deceased’s father, Sudhanshu Halder, multiple injuries and cuts were found on his son’s body, raising suspicions of murder.
“This is certainly not a case of natural death. We demand a thorough and impartial investigation. I do not want my son’s death investigation to meet the same fate as the horrific rape and murder case of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in 2024,” he said.
A relative, Uttam Mandal, described Pulak as a brilliant and hardworking young man with a humble nature. “I have also seen marks of injury and cuts on his face and abdomen. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that he was attacked before his death. I hope this case will be investigated fairly and justly,” he added.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Pulak was last seen on February 20, heading to the hostel canteen for a meal. He had not been seen outside the hostel premises since then, nor had any fellow students or hostel officials encountered him.
On Thursday, February 26, a foul odor began emanating from his room. When there was no response from inside, the door was forced open, revealing his decomposed body.
Family members informed the police that their last phone conversation with Pulak occurred on February 20, the day he went missing.
They also claimed that in the past, Pulak had reported being bullied by other students during protests related to the RG Kar rape and murder case. Allegations have surfaced that he was facing difficulties at college, although these claims have not yet been officially confirmed.
