Gold Coast, March 23: Matthew Renshaw has made a significant impact with his impressive batting in Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign. Despite enjoying his best year in limited-overs cricket, Renshaw emphasizes that returning to the Test team remains his top priority.
Renshaw made his Test debut in November 2016. He later debuted in One Day Internationals (ODIs) in October 2025 and T20s in January 2026, becoming the 63rd player to represent Australia in all three formats. His last Test match was during Australia’s tour of India in 2023.
After a stellar performance in the Sheffield Shield season, Renshaw hopes to secure a spot in the red-ball team. He scored a total of 499 runs this season at an average of 49.90, including three centuries.
With Usman Khawaja’s retirement leaving a gap in the middle order and Jake Weatherald still solidifying his role as an opener, Renshaw is in contention for a place in the playing eleven.
During a press conference following the announcement of Australia’s 2026-27 schedule, Renshaw stated, “When I was thinking about my goals in the pre-season, I never imagined I would debut in two different formats. Now that I have a little break, I can reflect on how successful this year has been. Trying to return to the Test team is my priority, but playing for Australia is always special. Competing in the T20 World Cup has been an incredible experience.”
The 29-year-old made his T20 debut earlier this year in Pakistan, scoring 37 runs against Ireland and 65 runs against Zimbabwe in the 2026 T20 World Cup. He emerged as Australia’s third-highest run-scorer in the tournament with just two innings.
Renshaw commented, “Especially in my ODI cricket, I find myself adapting the game more to my style. We are seeing more globally that bowlers are trying to change their bowling methods. In red-ball cricket, when bowlers delivered balls on the upper part of off-stump, you had to leave the ball as much as possible. Now, by stepping forward a bit, you change the angle of the bowling, forcing the bowler to think about what you are trying to do.”
Australia’s white-ball team will return with ODI and T20 tours against Pakistan and Bangladesh at the end of May and early June, while the Test team will be in action in August.
