Durban, October 11 (Daily Kiran) : Australian batsman Matt Renshaw delivered a stunning performance in Durban, scoring 190 runs in the first innings of the first Test against South Africa. This innings marks his highest score in Test cricket to date.
Batting at number five, Renshaw formed a crucial partnership of 134 runs with Nathan Lyon, helping Australia reach a total of 390 in their first innings. He described his second Test century as the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.
This achievement comes nearly ten years after Renshaw’s first Test century, ending a long wait for a three-figure score in the format. Speaking to reporters after the second day of play, the left-handed batsman reflected on the failures and opportunities that shaped his return to the Australian Test team.
“I have always wanted that second century. The pressure lifted off me after my first century. I feel that all the hard work, failures, and successes over the last ten years have come together in this moment. It feels great to achieve this,” Renshaw said.
This innings was particularly significant for Renshaw, as he played at an unfamiliar batting position of number five after returning to the team in 2023. Rather than focusing on quick runs, he concentrated on weathering the pressure, managing only three boundaries in the first day’s play, facing 115 balls.
He completed his half-century quickly on the second day and continued to trouble South Africa’s bowlers. For Renshaw, this innings was not just important for the team but also pivotal for his career. He acknowledged that he had missed a previous opportunity to solidify his place in the Australian lineup, making this chance even more meaningful.
“I was out of the team for a few years. When I got my chance in 2023, I didn’t capitalize on it. There’s always a fear that another opportunity might not come. So when I hit that shot, I was shouting, ‘Go, go, go!’ Many memories from my career flooded back at that moment. Nathan Lyon at the other end was also quite emotional. That moment was very special for me,” he shared.
Renshaw found a strong ally in Nathan Lyon, as they combined for a remarkable 134-run partnership for the ninth wicket, helping Australia recover from early setbacks. His innings set a record for the highest individual score by a player batting at number five or lower in a Test match in Durban, surpassing the previous record held by Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera, who scored an unbeaten 153 in 2019.
Rain disrupted play for the second consecutive day, but Australia maintained a firm grip on the match. In response to Australia’s substantial lead, South Africa’s start was rocky. Josh Hazlewood dismissed Ryan Rickelton for a duck. By the end of the day, South Africa had scored 27 runs for the loss of one wicket, still trailing Australia by 363 runs. Aiden Markram and David Beddingham remained not out on 15 and 12 runs, respectively, at stumps.
