Manchester United Eyes Lautaro Rivero as Defensive Reinforcement

Manchester United are prioritising strengthening their attacking options following a disappointing 2024/25 season. However, plans are also underway to bolster their defence once the current campaign concludes.

With Harry Maguire’s contract expiring this summer and Matthijs de Ligt’s injury concerns mounting, the Red Devils are seeking a left-footed centre-back who can eventually succeed Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw on the left side of the defence.

Need for Defensive Reinforcement

Amid growing criticism and speculation over Lisandro Martinez’s future at the club, Manchester United have identified his compatriot, Lautaro Rivero, as a promising backup option. According to reports from El Crack Deportivo, the 22-year-old River Plate defender is on United’s radar for a potential summer transfer.

River Plate are aware of the interest from the English giants and have inserted a €100 million release clause in Rivero’s contract to protect their asset. Besides Manchester United, several other clubs, including Strasbourg, Tottenham, City Football Group, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid, have also shown interest in the Argentina international.

Lisandro Martinez’s Potential Successor

Rivero is considered a key player under Marcelo Gallardo at River Plate and has already earned caps for Argentina’s national team. His versatility allows him to operate both as a central defender and a left-back, making him an attractive option for United’s defensive needs.

Having made 18 first-team appearances so far, Rivero is described as an “elite” ball-playing defender. If he continues his strong performances, he could be included in Argentina’s squad for the upcoming World Cup in the United States.

While River Plate’s high release clause may pose a challenge, it is expected that any deal agreed upon will likely be for a lower fee than the stated amount. Manchester United’s pursuit of this South American talent reflects their ongoing strategy to strengthen the squad with promising young players.
