Kolkata, April 16: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the central government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday. She claimed that the provisions related to delimitation in the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill are part of a conspiracy to divide the state once again.
Addressing an election rally in the Mathabhanga area of Cooch Behar district, Banerjee questioned, “Why were delimitation provisions introduced alongside the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill? This is yet another plot to divide West Bengal. It also aims to remove names from the voter list in the future and implement a National Register of Citizens in the state.”
Banerjee also targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah without naming him. She referred to recent comments about identifying and deporting illegal immigrants.
She stated, “It has been acknowledged that the special intensive revision of the voter list in West Bengal was conducted to remove names. Those now talking about sending people out of the state after the elections will themselves be sent to detention camps.”
The Chief Minister expressed her frustration over the recurring violence in Cooch Behar district ahead of the elections. She remarked, “Every election sees an increase in violence in West Bengal. I currently do not have full control over law and order, but I will regain that authority after the elections.”
Banerjee also alleged that the BJP lacks public support and a strong organization in West Bengal, which is why they are relying on central agencies.
She added, “The BJP does not have enough people to deploy at every polling station, so they are trying to place agency personnel there. They have brought in a lot of money.”
