Bengaluru, April 16: Muslim leaders in Karnataka have expressed strong opposition to the Congress party’s recent actions against Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) Abdul Jabbar and Naseer Ahmed, citing alleged anti-party activities during the by-elections. They have labeled these actions as biased and warned party leadership of serious consequences.
The Congress party removed MLC Naseer Ahmed from his position as the Chief Minister’s political advisor and expelled Abdul Jabbar from primary party membership. Previously, Jabbar was also asked to resign from the presidency of the minority cell. Discussions are intensifying regarding potential actions against Waqf and Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan.
During a press conference at the Bengaluru Press Club, Mohammad Iftikhar Qasim, a member of the Hajj Committee and a religious leader, questioned why the actions were directed solely at Muslim leaders. He alleged that there is deep resentment within the Muslim community regarding this issue, and they feel let down by the party’s high command.
He stated, “In a by-election and for one family, Congress has turned the entire Muslim community against itself.” Qasim further accused certain party leaders of causing this crisis within the community, holding the Congress leadership accountable.
He referenced the Bagalkot and Davanagere by-elections, noting that the benefits given to the Meti family were similarly applied in Davanagere. He questioned the need to provide opportunities to the family of the late Shamanur Shivashankarappa, whose son is already a minister and daughter-in-law an MP. He asked, “What was the necessity to give a ticket to their grandson?”
Another religious leader, Zulfiqar Ali, claimed that AICC General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala had promised tickets but later reneged on that commitment. He mentioned that Muslim leaders had worked in favor of Congress candidates in Davanagere and Bagalkot, only to face disciplinary actions once the voting concluded.
Ali warned that Congress would face repercussions for its actions. He stated that if the AHINDA (minorities, backward classes, and Dalits) community unites, Congress or any other party would lose political relevance.
He also noted that when seeking a ticket for the Davanagere seat in 2023, Congress had claimed it was essential to give the seat to the sitting MLA Shivashankarappa, assuring that a minority candidate would be considered next time, a promise that remains unfulfilled.
