Smriti Irani Responds to Akhilesh Yadavs Remarks on Women in Politics

New Delhi, April 16: Former Union Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani has hit back at Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav. Yadav recently made a statement implying that he had lost to a “saas-bahu” (mother-in-law and daughter-in-law) narrative without naming anyone. In response, Irani advised Yadav to focus on Parliament instead of television serials.

Irani took to social media platform X, stating, “I heard Akhilesh Ji remembered me in Parliament today. It’s good that those who inherited politics also remember those who carve their own paths. He comments on working women, yet has never held a job in his life. Focus on Parliament instead of serials, and ensure important bills for women’s empowerment are passed.”

Earlier, during a special session in the Lok Sabha regarding the Women’s Reservation and Delimitation Bill, Akhilesh Yadav criticized the central government. He remarked that the BJP does not genuinely want to grant women their rights, implying that they merely use the term ‘nari’ (woman) as a slogan.

Yadav questioned the BJP’s commitment to gender equality, stating, “How can a party that does not provide adequate representation to women in its organization talk about their respect and rights? Despite being in power for years, the state of gender equality in the country remains unsatisfactory.”

He further challenged the BJP by asking how many female Chief Ministers exist in the 21 states where they govern. Yadav emphasized that the party claiming to be the largest in the country has failed to adequately represent women within its own ranks. Currently, the number of women among BJP legislators is less than 10 percent, raising concerns about their representation in the Lok Sabha as well.
