Major Transfer of IAS Officers Ahead of Assam Assembly Elections

Guwahati, March 17: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made a significant decision ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections by transferring five IAS officers and appointing them as District Election Officers (DEOs).

In an official order issued to Assam’s Chief Secretary, the Commission stated that this decision was made after reviewing the preparations for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The aim is to ensure that the electoral process is conducted fairly and smoothly.

According to the order, IAS officer P. Uday Praveen (2016 batch) has been appointed as the DEO for Kokrajhar, while Srishti Singh (2021 batch) will serve as the DEO for Majuli district.

Additionally, Kimnei Changsang (2014 batch) has been designated as the DEO for Baksa district. Madhusudan Nath (2014 batch) has been transferred to serve as the DEO for Chirang district, and Jai Vikas (2021 batch) will take on the role of DEO for Udalguri district.

The Election Commission has instructed that these appointments take immediate effect, and the Assam government must ensure that the officers assume their respective positions. A compliance report regarding the joining of these officials is to be submitted to the Commission by 3 PM on March 17.

Furthermore, the Commission has directed that the transferred officers should not engage in any election-related responsibilities until the electoral process is completed.

These transfers are part of the administrative measures taken by the Election Commission to ensure fairness and transparency during the elections. Voting for all 126 assembly seats in Assam will take place in a single phase on April 9, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The Commission is continuously issuing administrative directives and deploying officials to monitor the election preparations in the state.
