Major Naxalite Gunned Down in Dantewada-Bijapur Encounter

Raipur, March 5: In a significant encounter near the border of Dantewada and Bijapur districts in Chhattisgarh, police forces have neutralized a Naxalite with a bounty of ₹5 lakh on his head. The clash occurred in a forested and hilly area, where police also recovered a substantial cache of weapons and Naxalite materials.

According to Chhattisgarh police, on March 3, they received intelligence about Naxalites storing arms and supplies in the jungle between the villages of Gumlanar, Girasapara, and Nelgoda under the Geedam police station area. Based on this information, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Bastar Fighters was dispatched for the operation, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Naxal) Rahul Kumar Uike.

At around 12:30 PM, police forces were conducting a thorough search and cordon in the suspected area. Between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM, approximately ten Naxalites from the Bhairamgarh Area Committee ambushed the police team. The Naxalites opened fire with automatic weapons, targeting the police.

The police personnel quickly took defensive positions and warned the Naxalites to surrender. However, the firing from the Naxalites continued unabated. In response, the police engaged in self-defense. The effective return fire from the police forced the Naxalites to retreat, taking advantage of the darkness and dense forest.

After the encounter, during the search operation, police discovered the body of a Naxalite. Recovered from the scene were an SLR rifle, an INSAS rifle, a pistol, a walkie-talkie set, magazines, live cartridges, and other Naxalite materials. The deceased was identified through surrendered cadres as Rajesh Punem, an ACM of the Bhairamgarh Area Committee, who had a reward of ₹5 lakh on his head.

In light of potential threats from IEDs and ambushes, security forces conducted a comprehensive search operation throughout the area, ensuring all personnel returned safely to the Dantewada headquarters. No injuries were reported among the security forces, and the search operations in the area continue.
