Mumbai, April 18: The Maharashtra government’s strategic advisory body, the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Earth Day Network India. This agreement aims to implement environmental initiatives across the state, including the ambitious planting of 5.6 million trees to combat climate change.
Signed on Earth Day 2026, this MOU is expected to strengthen the framework for sustainable development and unite citizens, institutions, and industries towards a greener future.
Under this agreement, MITRA will provide policy guidance and financial support, while Earth Day Network India will be responsible for grassroots implementation, awareness campaigns, and enhancing public participation, as stated in a government release.
A statewide Mission Life will be launched to encourage positive behavioral changes among citizens. To address challenges in government energy audits, accountability will be established to improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption. Additionally, artists and members of the cultural community will be involved to raise awareness about climate change.
The agreement also aims to develop Mumbai as a global hub for sustainable events.
According to the release, the most significant component of this MOU is the extensive tree planting campaign of 5.6 million trees. This initiative marks the 56th anniversary of Earth Day, with trees being planted across the state. It is part of the Maharashtra government’s ‘Green Maharashtra’ campaign, which aims to plant 3 billion trees. This campaign will focus not only on planting but also on the survival rate of the trees, their maintenance, and long-term environmental impact.
Through this MOU, Maharashtra is taking a significant and visionary step towards sustainable development to address the challenges of climate change. The state government has committed to making Maharashtra the ‘climate action leader’ in the country with this global initiative.
