Mumbai, March 5: In a significant operation, police in Kalyan, Maharashtra, have dismantled an organized gang posing as law enforcement officers. The Kolsewadi police arrested eight individuals involved in a scam amounting to ₹5 lakh. Authorities seized ₹2.36 lakh in cash, two Scorpio vehicles used in the crime, and nine mobile phones. The search for additional suspects is ongoing.
According to police reports, the gang lured Deepak Shinde, a resident of Wagholi, Pune, with an offer to exchange ₹5 lakh for ₹7 lakh in cash (in denominations of ₹10, ₹50, and ₹100). Shinde was summoned to Kalyan East for the transaction. Upon arriving at the Vitthalwadi railway station with the money, the gang pretended to hand over counterfeit currency. At that moment, three to four individuals emerged from a Scorpio vehicle, posing as police officers, and staged an interrogation. They then tricked the person accompanying Shinde into their vehicle and snatched the bag containing ₹5 lakh from him before fleeing the scene.
Upon receiving the report, the Kolsewadi police registered a case under Crime Number 103/2026. The crime branch initiated an investigation based on technical analysis and mobile location tracking. They discovered that the suspects were heading towards the Old Pune Highway in a Scorpio (MH-04-JD-7823). The Talegaon Dabhade police were alerted, and a blockade was set up at the Somatne Fata toll plaza, leading to the arrest of four suspects.
The remaining gang members attempted to escape via the Alandi route towards Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar). With assistance from the Rahuri police station, another blockade was established, resulting in the capture of the remaining suspects. Those arrested include Sanjay Nagojirav Bhosale (56), Gauspak Ghulam Hussain Sheikh (36), Sominath Tulshiram Gaikwad (50), Arvind Nagnath Jojat (39), Umashankar Hanuman Prasad Pandey alias Pappu (51), Sharad Kumar Mohan (46), Naresh Fattu Sharma (45), and Lakshman alias Pradeep Vishwanath Dhanve (38).
This successful operation was executed under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Jhende, Assistant Commissioner of Police Kalyanji Ghete, Senior Inspector Hemant Gurkh, and Inspector Ganesh Nhayde. Police stated that the gang intimidated and deceived people by falsely presenting themselves as police officers.
