Maharashtra Government Launches Initiative to Make Mumbai Slum-Free

Mumbai, March 31: In a significant move towards transforming Mumbai into a slum-free city, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced the launch of the Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Urban Welfare Campaign on Monday.

This initiative aims to expedite the redevelopment of slums while implementing the advanced NETRM (Network for Encroachment Tracking and Reporting for Mumbai) technology to prevent new illegal encroachments.

Shinde stated that this important campaign, initiated during the centenary celebration of Balasaheb Thackeray, serves as a fitting tribute to the late leader’s vision for the city.

The state government’s decision is expected to accelerate the slum redevelopment process, paving the way for citizens to move into equipped and secure housing.

“We are determined to realize Balasaheb Thackeray’s dream of a slum-free Mumbai through this mission,” he added.

According to the Deputy Chief Minister, priority will be given to areas covering over 50 acres where more than 51% of the land is occupied by slums. The slum cluster redevelopment plan will be implemented by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority on large parcels of private, government, and semi-government land.

All slum dwellers will undergo precise mapping and biometric verification. Furthermore, agreements will be signed with agencies such as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, and Mahapreet to streamline implementation.

In a significant relief for residents, the government has decided to increase the minimum size of reconstructed homes. All eligible residents will now receive apartments of 300 square feet.

Existing old projects will also be upgraded to meet these new standards. The Deputy Chief Minister noted that the government is launching the NETRM scheme to prevent the construction of new slums in Mumbai.
