
Mumbai, May 28: Maharashtra is establishing itself as one of India’s top innovation and enterprise hubs. The state boasts over 150,000 recognized startups by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), supported by a robust industrial infrastructure and increasing investments in technology and entrepreneurship. This statement was made by a senior government official.
Dr. P. Anbalagan (IAS), Principal Secretary of the Industries Department in Maharashtra, shared insights at the CII-HBNI Research Scholar Summit. He noted that the state contributes 14% to India’s GDP and approximately 25% to industrial production. Cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur are driving growth in fintech, deep tech, manufacturing, engineering research, and startup incubation.
Anbalagan further emphasized that the state’s innovation ecosystem is fostering research-based entrepreneurship, job creation, and enhancing global competitiveness.
During the recently held CII-HBNI Summit, leaders from industry, government, academia, startups, and research institutions discussed strengthening innovation-based development through deeper academic-industry collaboration. The discussions focused on the role of the innovation ecosystem in commercializing research, developing startups, creating skills, and boosting employment and entrepreneurship.
Sessions at the CII-HBNI Summit highlighted that guidance for researchers, incubation support, access to funding, and industry engagement can accelerate enterprise creation, skilled job generation, and technology-driven economic growth.
Moreover, the need for strong partnerships between academic institutions, startups, and industry was underscored to build future-ready talent and globally competitive enterprises.
The summit also provided a platform for industry leaders to connect with emerging research talents, identify scalable technologies, and explore the potential for innovation-based collaborations with commercial and industrial viability.
Prominent participants at the inaugural session of the CII-HBNI Summit included Professor U. Kamachi Mudali, Vice Chancellor of the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), Aarti Kuchibhatla, Vice Chairperson of CII Maharashtra, Bharat Agarwal, Chair of the CII WR Education Taskforce and President of Vishwakarma University, Dr. Alpa Antani, Regional Director of CII, and Martin Mascarenhas, Director of the Beam Technology Development Group at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Chair of the Atal Incubation Centre.
