Patna, April 19: Upendra Kushwaha, leader of the National Lok Morcha, has declared that the failure of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha marks a dark day in India’s political history.
In a statement released on Sunday, he acknowledged the NDA government’s significant efforts to create opportunities for women and youth through the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for presenting such crucial legislation in the House.
Former Union Minister Kushwaha emphasized that the Delimitation Bill is directly linked to the democratic principle of ‘equal representation.’ He noted that the country’s population has surged over the past decades, resulting in an overwhelming number of voters in many constituencies, making it challenging for a single representative to address everyone’s issues.
He stated, “The delimitation was supposed to reorganize seats, ensuring every citizen’s voice is equally represented in the legislature (Lok Sabha and Assemblies). However, due to the cunning tactics of the Mahagathbandhan, the rights of women, youth, and all citizens have been stripped away, which we strongly condemn.”
Kushwaha explained that according to Article 82 of the Constitution, the Delimitation Bill would have increased the number of Lok Sabha and Assembly seats across the country by one and a half times. In Bihar, for instance, the number of Lok Sabha seats would rise from 40 to 60, and Assembly seats from 243 to 365, benefiting the common people socially, politically, and economically. Additionally, the Women’s Reservation Bill would reserve one-third of the seats for women, creating new opportunities for them.
It is noteworthy that Upendra Kushwaha has long advocated for the issue of delimitation. The National Lok Morcha has also organized a grand rally on ‘Constitutional Rights – Delimitation Reform’ in Vikramganj, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, and Patna.
