Bhopal, July 22: The political debate in Madhya Pradesh has intensified following the passage of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the state assembly. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hailed it as a crucial step for national unity, integrity, and women’s rights. In contrast, the opposition accused the government of not allowing sufficient discussion on the matter.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated, “This law has been enacted with the interests of half the population, namely women, in mind. The aim of the Uniform Civil Code is to ensure equal rights and equal arrangements for all citizens.”
BJP legislator Usha Thakur also supported the bill, asserting, “The UCC is essential for the unity, integrity, and identity of the country. It should have been implemented immediately after independence, but it is being enacted only now after so many years.” She urged the opposition to take this issue seriously.
Opposition leader Umang Singhar raised questions about the government’s process, saying, “The government does not want to discuss this topic adequately and is avoiding sending the bill to committee.” He demanded that comprehensive discussions should take place on such an important issue.
BJP legislator Chintamani Malviya noted, “The Uniform Civil Code has been awaited for a long time. Article 44 of the Constitution directs the state to work towards a Uniform Civil Code. The judiciary has also expressed its opinion on this matter from time to time.”
BJP legislator Abhilash Pandey mentioned, “Articles 14 and 44 of the Constitution refer to equality and the provision for a Uniform Civil Code. The state government has taken steps under this constitutional provision.”
Minister Govind Singh Rajput targeted the opposition, stating, “The government easily passed the bill, and there was a supportive atmosphere in the house. The opposition could neither openly oppose nor support the bill, revealing differences within their ranks on this issue.”
Minister Vishwas Sarang accused Congress, saying, “The opposition lacks solid arguments regarding the UCC and is merely trying to politicize the issue. Once the Uniform Civil Code is implemented, there will be uniform rules for all citizens, which will curb many practices related to marriage.”
BJP legislator Rameshwar Sharma accused Congress of politicizing tribal and minority issues, stating, “Tribal communities have been excluded from the UCC, yet Congress opposes it. Their opposition is politically motivated.”
