New Delhi, August 4: The Lok Sabha’s proceedings faced yet another interruption on Tuesday during the ongoing monsoon session. Shortly after the session resumed at 11 AM, it was adjourned again until 2 PM. Subsequently, the Speaker announced that the house would reconvene on Wednesday at 11 AM.
As soon as the session began, opposition MPs started chanting slogans. They demanded the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah to address the police action against protesters that occurred on July 20 at Jantar Mantar.
Speaker Om Birla urged the members to remain seated and allow question time to proceed peacefully. He emphasized that this was a crucial moment and that shouting would hinder discussions on important issues. However, the opposition’s uproar continued, leading to the adjournment of the proceedings first until 2 PM and then until the next day.
This monsoon session has been marred by disruptions from the start. The opposition has persistently sought answers from the government regarding the NEET paper leak issue and the police action against protesters at Jantar Mantar. They have alleged that live ammunition was used against the demonstrators, calling for a statement from the Home Minister in the house.
Earlier on Monday, amidst the opposition’s ruckus, a significant bill was passed. The ‘Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026’, which pertains to increasing the number of judges in the Supreme Court, was approved by voice vote in the Lok Sabha.
Central Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the bill despite the opposition’s protests. Krishna Prasad Teneti, who was presiding over the proceedings, repeatedly appealed to members to maintain order and allow the session to continue, but the dissent persisted. Nevertheless, the bill received approval.
