
New Delhi: The livestock sector has been a key driver in strengthening India’s agricultural economy, growing at an average annual rate of 12.77 percent since 2014-15, according to government data. This growth has significantly contributed to increasing farmers’ incomes across the country.
As per the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the contribution of livestock to the total Gross Value Added (GVA) in agriculture and allied sectors rose from 24.38 percent in 2014-15 to 30.87 percent in 2023-24. In the same year, the livestock sector accounted for 5.49 percent of the total Gross Value of Output (GVO) at current prices.
India maintains its position as the world’s largest milk producer, contributing 25 percent to global production. Over the past 11 years, milk production has expanded at an annual growth rate of 5.41 percent, increasing from 146.31 million tonnes in 2014-15 to an estimated 247.87 million tonnes in 2024-25.
The official statement also highlighted that global milk production grew by only 1.12 percent in 2024 compared to 2023. In India, per capita milk availability stands at 485 grams per day during the current fiscal year, significantly higher than the global average of 328 grams per day, indicating better accessibility within the country.
According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization’s corporate statistical database (FAOSTAT), India ranks second in egg production and fourth in meat production worldwide. Egg production rose from 7.848 billion in 2014-15 to an estimated 14.911 billion in 2024-25, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.63 percent over the last 11 years.
Per capita egg availability has also improved, reaching 106 eggs per person annually in 2024-25 compared to 62 eggs in 2014-15. Meat production increased from 6.69 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 10.50 million tonnes in 2024-25, reflecting a steady annual growth rate of 4.61 percent.
These figures underscore the vital role of the livestock sector in India’s expanding agricultural economy and its contribution to food security and rural livelihoods.
