Liverpool Parts Ways with Coach Arne Slot After Disappointing Season

Mumbai, May 30: Liverpool FC, the renowned English football club, has dismissed head coach Arne Slot after two seasons in charge. The Dutch manager led the team to its 20th league title in his first season but failed to replicate that success the following year. In the 2025-26 Premier League, Liverpool finished fifth and missed direct qualification for the UEFA Champions League 2026-27.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club’s owners, stated, “It goes without saying that this was a very difficult decision for us as a club. Arne’s contribution during his time with Liverpool FC has been significant, meaningful, and above all, successful for our supporters and us.”

The statement continued, “We cannot express enough appreciation for what he has achieved, especially given that his hard work, dedication, and expertise were key to his success as a leader in his field. From the moment we first met Arne, it was clear he was someone who not only accepts responsibility but fully embraces it.”

This season, Liverpool managed to accumulate only 60 points in the Premier League, a drop of 24 points compared to Slot’s impressive first season. The club faced defeat 19 times across all competitions in the 2025-26 season.

The club’s announcement highlighted Slot’s achievements, stating, “Since joining in June 2024, Arne secured our 20th league title in his first season. He finished the 2024-25 season as ‘LMA Manager of the Year’ and led the team to the Carabao Cup final and the Champions League Round of 16. He also played a crucial role in qualifying for the Champions League for a second consecutive season, reaching the quarter-finals.”

Arne Slot, previously the coach of Feyenoord, was appointed in 2024 as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, becoming only the second permanent manager for Liverpool in nearly a decade. However, the club decided to terminate his contract a year early, leading to a mutual agreement to part ways.

Liverpool has confirmed that the process of appointing a new manager has begun. According to media reports, Andoni Iraola is currently the frontrunner for the position. He led his south-coast club to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League and secured qualification for the UEFA Europa League for the first time in the club’s history, making him a strong candidate for the Liverpool coaching role.
