Mumbai, March 16: The Rampur police in Uttar Pradesh have filed a case against Yusuf Malik, a leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), at the Ganj police station.
The allegations state that Malik provided false statements to the media under the name of Azam Khan, aiming to incite hatred between two communities.
According to police reports, on March 14, Malik claimed during a media interaction outside Rampur jail that Azam Khan had made a statement urging Muslims, particularly Sunni Muslims, to wear black clothes this Eid instead of new attire. He also mentioned that they should wear black armbands in mourning for 160 girls allegedly killed by Israel in Iran.
Additionally, Malik stated that Khan had urged followers not to laugh and to support Sunni Muslims. He also claimed that Khan had met with Abdullah Azam.
However, Sub-Inspector Premchand revealed that the investigation found no evidence of a meeting between Malik and Azam Khan on March 14. Malik’s false statement, made without any meeting, was deemed an attempt to spread hatred between communities. Consequently, a case has been registered against him under sections 196(1), 353(2), and 57 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The police indicated that Malik’s statement was detrimental to social harmony and has been proven false during the investigation. The inquiry is ongoing, and further evidence is being collected. Malik’s remarks have sparked significant controversy at the local level.
