
New Delhi, March 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Wednesday that India is developing a robust energy system, paving the way for a sustainable environment to meet future needs.

According to the minister, India has seen remarkable growth in electricity production and transmission capacity, reducing the national energy deficit from 4.2% in the fiscal year 2013-14 to just 0.03% by fiscal year 2025-26.
Khattar noted, “In the fiscal year 2025-26 (up to January 2026), a record 52.53 gigawatts of capacity has been added from all sources, marking the highest increase in a single year and surpassing the previous best of 34.05 gigawatts in 2024-25.”
Moreover, total electricity production has risen from 1,020.2 billion units (BU) in fiscal year 2014 to 1,830 BU in fiscal year 2025. Per capita consumption has increased from 957 kilowatt-hours in 2014 to 1,460 kilowatt-hours in 2025, reflecting economic growth and improved access.
The minister concluded, “This ensures that every home, farm, and industry receives the necessary reliable electricity, making India the third-largest producer and consumer of electricity in the world.”
