Kinnaur, August 6: Continuous rainfall in Uttarakhand has triggered multiple landslides across the region. On Tuesday morning, light rain caused a landslide in Nigulsari, located in the Nichar block of Kinnaur. This incident has blocked National Highway-5 due to falling rocks from the mountains. The situation remains precarious as rockfalls continue in the area. Additionally, landslides in Helang have completely obstructed the Badrinath National Highway, while the Narayanbagar–Karnprayag main road is also closed due to landslides in Aamsaud.
Authorities have urged people to avoid traveling on the roads near Nigulsari following the landslides. An alternative route has been arranged for vehicle movement, but the risk of rockfalls remains high during the ongoing rain. Efforts are underway to clear debris and rocks from the landslide-affected areas, but the continuous rockfalls are hindering restoration efforts.
The weather in the district has been unfavorable for several days, with daily rain occurring in the Nichar block during the morning and evening. However, light rain has only been reported in Pooh and Kalpa blocks, with the sky mostly overcast.
During the monsoon season, the threat of landslides near Nigulsari and Nathpa Jhula poses significant challenges for apple and pea farmers in the area.
According to the Meteorological Center, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is expected in most districts of the state on Thursday. Heavy rain and lightning are anticipated in Dehradun, Chamoli, and Bageshwar.
Furthermore, a yellow alert has been issued for the districts of Tehri, Uttarkashi, Pauri, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Nainital, and Rudraprayag, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall and lightning in these areas. Alerts for thunderstorms and rain have also been issued for Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar.
