Madrid, 20 August (Kiran News). Thanks to a penalty goal from French striker Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid began their La Liga 2025-26 season with a strong win. On Tuesday at Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid defeated Osasuna 1-0, giving new coach Xabi Alonso a winning start.

The only goal of the match came early in the second half when Osasuna defender Juan Cruz committed a foul, resulting in a penalty for Madrid. Mbappe converted the opportunity, sending the ball past goalkeeper Sergio Herrera in the opposite direction, giving his team the lead. This goal proved to be the match-winner.

Real Madrid played this match without England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who will be out until October following shoulder surgery. Trent Alexander-Arnold, newly signed from Liverpool, made his La Liga debut. Summer signings Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras also started in the lineup.

In the first half, Madrid did not get many clear chances against Osasuna’s solid defence. Goalkeeper Herrera stopped long-range attempts from centre-backs Huijsen and Militao. Mbappe could not finish a cross from Vinicius Junior cleanly.

After taking the lead through the penalty in the second half, Madrid controlled the match. Alonso also handed a debut to 18-year-old Argentine winger Franco Mastantuono, who performed well but had his effort saved by Herrera.

Osasuna could not find a way back into the match. In injury time, Abel Bretonnes received a red card for raising his hand to stop Gonzalo Garcia, leaving the team with 10 players.

With this victory, Real Madrid continued their tradition since 2008 of never losing their opening La Liga match.
