Kolkata, August 26: The Kolkata police are actively investigating recent events at Jadavpur University. They are focusing on information provided by the university administration and viral mobile video clips circulating on social media. Investigators aim to uncover who incited the clashes and how the situation escalated.
A police officer from Kolkata stated on Wednesday that they will record statements from security guards and conduct detailed inquiries. The examination of CCTV footage from the campus has also commenced.
The forensic team of Kolkata police has collected several samples from various locations within the university. They are particularly trying to determine whether any flammable or chemical substances were used during the incident. Officials believe that forensic analysis will help clarify the nature and causes of the events. Additional samples may be compared if necessary.
Following discussions with the university administration, the police have compiled a list of security guards. Investigators will ask them about their duties at the time of the incident, what they observed, and whether they witnessed any disturbances or arson.
Authorities believe that the statements from security guards and any video recordings on their mobile phones could provide crucial leads for the investigation. They will also check if any videos were recorded on or around the day of the incident, and whether they captured any significant moments.
Investigative agencies will compare the information, documents, and video footage provided by the university with the video clips circulating on social media. Forensic experts will verify if the videos are indeed from the day of the incident, check for any editing, and identify individuals present in the footage.
On Tuesday, Assistant Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Jha visited the university to investigate the allegations. He discussed the clashes between the All India Students’ Federation (SFI) and leftist student organizations with Registrar Salim Box Mandal.
It is noteworthy that clashes occurred on August 19 and 20 outside Jadavpur University in South Kolkata between workers from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) student wing, the SFI, and ABVP activists.
The first clash took place at the 8B bus stand intersection between SFI activists and security personnel. The second clash occurred in front of the university’s main gate between SFI and ABVP workers.
During the second clash, the emblem of Jadavpur University, designed by renowned artist Nandalal Bose, was damaged. It was later repaired and reinstalled at Gate No. 4 on August 21.
Meanwhile, the Jadavpur University administration has formed an inquiry committee led by former judge Pranab Kumar Chatterjee to investigate the incidents of August 19 and 20. The committee’s first meeting is scheduled for August 27.
