Kolkata and Mumbai Await Test Matches Against Australia After Two Decades

New Delhi, March 26: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the schedule for the Indian cricket team’s domestic season for 2026-27. The Australian cricket team is set to tour India early next year for a five-match Border-Gavaskar Test series. However, the venues for these matches do not include Kolkata’s Eden Gardens or Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

Test matches between India and Australia are always thrilling, whether held in India or Australia. Fans in major cities where international matches are played eagerly anticipate hosting these games. The BCCI strives to give every city a chance to host, yet it has shown indifference towards organizing Tests at Eden Gardens and Wankhede Stadium against Australia.

The last encounter at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens between India and Australia took place in 2001. Thanks to memorable performances by VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid, along with strong bowling from Harbhajan Singh and Sachin Tendulkar, India achieved a historic victory after following on. This win is etched in the golden history of Test cricket. Since then, Australia has toured India multiple times for Test series, but no matches have been held at Eden Gardens, which is concerning.

Similarly, Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium last hosted a Test between India and Australia in 2004. India secured a thrilling 13-run victory in a low-scoring match, thanks to an exceptional bowling performance by Murali Kartik.

Both Eden Gardens and Wankhede Stadium hold significant historical importance in Indian cricket and have witnessed its evolution. Excluding these venues from the Test matches against Australia is, in a way, an injustice to both the stadiums and their fans. The BCCI should certainly reconsider this decision.

The Border-Gavaskar Series 2027 will feature the first Test from January 21 to 25 (Nagpur), the second Test from January 29 to February 2 (Chennai), the third Test from February 11 to 15 (Guwahati), the fourth Test from February 19 to 23 (Ranchi), and the fifth Test from February 27 to March 3 (Ahmedabad).
