Kesara Nuwanta Sets Unwanted Record in Test Debut Against India

Galle, August 17: The first Test match between India and Sri Lanka is currently underway at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. In the first innings, India was bowled out for 462 runs, marking an unwanted record for debutant Kesara Nuwanta.

Nuwanta bowled a total of 39 overs in the first innings against India, conceding 175 runs while taking 3 wickets. This performance is now recorded as the third most expensive spell bowled by a Sri Lankan in a Test debut. The record for the most expensive debut spell belongs to Suraj Randiv, who, in 2010 against India, gave away 222 runs while claiming 2 wickets. Despite this, Nuwanta managed to dismiss key batsmen KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja.

In the first innings, Prabath Jayasuriya was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, claiming 4 wickets for 109 runs in his 39 overs. Asitha Fernando also contributed with 2 wickets for 63 runs. On the batting front, Devdutt Padikkal delivered an impressive performance for India, scoring a brilliant century with 167 runs off 230 balls, including 15 boundaries and one six. Padikkal formed a crucial partnership of 162 runs for the second wicket with KL Rahul and added 71 runs with Rishabh Pant.

KL Rahul also showcased his batting skills, scoring 82 runs off 175 balls, which included 10 fours and one six. Dhruv Jurel chipped in with a valuable half-century, scoring 51 runs off 68 balls. However, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to convert their promising starts into big scores, with Pant scoring 39 runs off 62 balls and Jaiswal making 32 runs off 37 balls, including five fours. Captain Shubman Gill contributed 16 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja managed just 13 runs. Lower-order batsman Mohammad Siraj scored 11 runs, and Kuldeep Yadav remained unbeaten on 13 runs.
