Ernakulam, March 31: In a sharp critique, Kerala’s opposition leader and senior Congress figure, V.D. Satheesan, has accused Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of evading public debate. Satheesan claims that Vijayan has repeatedly made false assertions while avoiding direct discussions.
He expressed disappointment over the Chief Minister’s choice to engage in conversations on social media instead of facing opposition leaders in person. Satheesan expected Vijayan to announce a date and venue for a debate.
The opposition leader pointed out that when Congress counters Vijayan’s online claims, he remains completely silent. Citing housing statistics, Satheesan challenged Vijayan’s assertion that only 4,000 homes were constructed during the tenure of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. He stated that official figures reveal over 443,000 homes were built, as confirmed by responses from Vijayan’s own cabinet. Despite this, Satheesan noted that there has been no response from Vijayan since.
On the politically sensitive issue of support from the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), Satheesan reiterated that the United Democratic Front (UDF) has clearly rejected any such backing. He accused Vijayan of adopting an opportunistic approach, claiming that his stance varies when dealing with organizations like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, SDPI, and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Satheesan emphasized that the UDF is the first front to reject SDPI’s support, a fact that the Chief Minister should not overlook. He also alleged that the CPI-M is attempting to form alliances with both minority and majority communal forces for electoral gain, but insisted that such efforts will fail in Kerala’s secular political landscape.
