Thiruvananthapuram, March 27: In a sharp critique, opposition leader V.D. Satheesan has launched an attack on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during a campaign event in the outskirts of Kattakkada. He accused Vijayan of frequently changing his stance for electoral gain and promoting communal discrimination against both majority and minority groups.
Speaking to the media, Satheesan claimed that the Chief Minister adopts a policy of appeasement based on political circumstances, sometimes favoring minorities and at other times the majority. He pointed out that during parliamentary elections, the focus was on minority appeasement, which later shifted to majority appeasement when the situation changed.
Satheesan also noted that Vijayan has publicly taken contradictory positions on sensitive issues. He accused the Chief Minister of misleading the public regarding alleged ties with Jamaat-e-Islami. According to Satheesan, Vijayan’s previous statements denying any connections have been contradicted by earlier remarks and documented evidence. Despite the evidence, he continues to mislead the public.
Addressing the Sabarimala issue, Satheesan mentioned that the Chief Minister initially stated his government would not change its stance on women’s entry for electoral benefits. However, after facing electoral defeat, he softened his position.
Furthermore, Satheesan alleged that the government has failed to take decisive action in cases involving CPI-M workers, providing protection to the guilty. He described the national developments as ‘selective action,’ comparing the lengthy questioning of Rahul Gandhi by central agencies to the handling of cases involving the Chief Minister’s family.
Despite the criticisms, Satheesan expressed confidence that the United Democratic Front (UDF) would secure victories in key constituencies like Malampuzha and Kongad. Defending his participation in public discussions amid criticism, he stated that debating on various political platforms is a long-standing democratic practice.
