Christchurch, March 29: South African all-rounder Kayla Reneke has achieved a remarkable milestone. She has become the first female cricketer to win the ‘Player of the Match’ award on her debut in multiple formats.
Reneke secured this accolade during a One Day International match against New Zealand in Christchurch on Sunday. The 20-year-old also won the ‘Player of the Match’ title in her T20 debut against Pakistan earlier this year.
In international cricket, Reneke is now the fifth player overall to earn the ‘Player of the Match’ award on debut in more than one format. Previously, this achievement was held by Elias Sunny (Test and T20), Mustafizur Rahman (Test and ODI), Ben Foakes (ODI and Test), and Lungi Ngidi (Test and T20).
Reneke played a crucial role in leading South Africa to a thrilling victory against New Zealand. With 14 runs needed in the final over, she maintained her composure alongside teammate Tumi Sekhukhune. Suzie Bates was tasked with defending the target for New Zealand. Reneke hit a six off the third ball, bringing the required runs down to six off the last three balls.
She then cleared the boundary on the final ball, securing the win for South Africa. Reneke finished her innings unbeaten with 42 runs off 32 balls, including three fours and two sixes.
Earlier, New Zealand was bowled out for 268 runs, with Maddy Green top-scoring with 85 runs. Amelia Kerr contributed 36 runs, while Izzy Gaze added 37. Ayabonga Khaka of South Africa delivered a standout performance, taking six wickets for 56 runs.
Chasing a target of 269 runs, South Africa found themselves at 30/2 before Anneke Dirkse (72) and Sune Luus (53) stabilized the innings with a 123-run partnership. Nadine de Klerk also chipped in with 39 runs, but it was Reneke’s explosive batting at the end that proved decisive for the victory.
