Karur, September 28 (Udaipur Kiran News) – A massive stampede at a political rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district on Sunday evening claimed the lives of 39 people, including 8 children and 16 women, leaving more than 50 others injured. The tragic incident occurred during a public gathering organized by Tamil Nadu Vetri Kalagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay.
The mishap took place around 7 PM in the Velusamipuram area during Vijay’s “Velicham Veliyeru” election rally. Panic spread among the crowd, triggering a stampede that left several dead and many others critically injured. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals where they are undergoing treatment.
The incident has shocked the nation. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
Relief and Investigation Announced
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for the injured. The state government has also ordered a judicial inquiry into the tragedy, to be led by retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan.
Nation Mourns the Loss
President Murmu called the deaths “deeply saddening” and prayed for the recovery of those injured. Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also conveyed condolences and prayers.
TVK chief Joseph Vijay expressed heartbreak over the tragedy, saying the incident has caused him “unbearable pain.”
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami described the incident as “deeply distressing” and instructed former minister Vijayabhaskar to assist the injured at the local government hospital.
