Karthik Upsets Kombaj at Fenesta Open; Surya, Chaudhary Advance to Quarterfinals

New Delhi, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : In a thrilling match at the 31st Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship held at DLTA in New Delhi, 21-year-old Pranav Karthik delivered a stunning upset on Wednesday. After dropping the first set, Karthik rallied to defeat fourth seed Udit Kombaj.

Kombaj took the opening set decisively, winning 6-1. However, Karthik fought back fiercely, pushing the second set to a tiebreak, which he won 7-3. He maintained his momentum in the final set, ultimately securing victory with a score of 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 after a grueling 2 hours and 31 minutes.

In other matches, top seed Manish Sureshkumar easily advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Tarun Sood 6-0, 6-1. He will be joined in the final eight by sixth seed Man Kesarwani, eighth seed Rohan Mehra, and Suraj Prabodh, who triumphed over second seed Aditya Balsekar in the previous round.

In the women’s singles draw, the top five players also secured their spots in the quarterfinals. Vaidehi Chaudhary overcame 16-year-old Ahan with a score of 6-4, 6-1, while Shruti Ahlawat defeated Parthasarathi Mundhe 6-2, 6-2.

Third seed Akanksha Nitture also advanced, coming back after losing the second set to beat Yubrani Banerjee 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

The boys’ under-18 singles draw saw a significant upset as top seed Praneel Sharma was defeated by Veer Jiten Madam with a score of 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Fourth seed Om Ramesh Patel and fifth seed Aditya Mor both won their third-round matches in straight sets, earning spots in the quarterfinals alongside Madam.

In the girls’ under-18 event, top seed Savita Bhuvaneshwaran faced a tough challenge from 14th seed Ahida Singh. Their match lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes before Singh had to retire, with Bhuvaneshwaran leading 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 3-0 at the time. Alongside Bhuvaneshwaran, second seed Parthasarathi Mundhe and third seed Shrinithi Chaudhary also progressed to the quarterfinals.
