Karnataka Deputy CM Urges Legislators to Maintain Party Discipline Amidst Cabinet Reshuffle Discussions

Bengaluru, April 13: Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has issued a warning to legislators, advising them to meet with the high command but refrain from making unnecessary public statements.

Shivakumar emphasized that while there is nothing wrong with party legislators visiting Delhi to meet the Congress high command, any unnecessary public comments could lead to disciplinary action from the party.

Speaking to reporters at the residence of Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge in Bengaluru, he stated, “All legislators must uphold party discipline. They should respect the party and not harm its reputation in front of the media. The Chief Minister has already addressed this issue. Everyone’s future lies with the party, not with the media.”

His comments came in response to questions regarding the visit of 25 legislators to New Delhi. When asked if the legislators consulted him before their trip, he replied, “Some of them did. There is nothing wrong in asking the high command for ministerial positions.”

He added, “Both first-time and second-time legislators can become ministers, as has happened before, but this is not the right time. Elections are still ongoing. Some individuals have gone to Tamil Nadu. Let the elections conclude first, and then we can consider this matter.”

Regarding his meeting with Kharge, the Deputy CM mentioned, “The party instructed me to go to Tamil Nadu. I went, returned, and need to go again. I had to report back to the party president. I met him and submitted my report.”

In a significant political development, around 25 Congress legislators held a breakfast meeting at the Karnataka Bhavan in Delhi on Monday. The meeting focused on discussions about a cabinet reshuffle and demonstrated support through a signature campaign.

Sources indicate that several legislators participated in this informal gathering, emphasizing the need for a cabinet reshuffle. They noted that the government has completed three years of its term, thus necessitating the introduction of new faces.

During the meeting, legislators signed a memorandum advocating for ministerial positions and increased representation. This signature campaign is viewed as an effort to collectively communicate their expectations to the party high command.

Meanwhile, Virajpet MLA and Chief Minister’s legal advisor A.S. Ponnanna stated that senior legislators have called for a cabinet reshuffle in the state. He stressed that this demand should not be perceived as rebellion or anti-party activity.

Ponnanna, speaking to reporters in Madikeri, noted that the government has completed three years in office, and in this context, the demand for new faces in the cabinet is gaining momentum within the party.
