Kagiso Rabada Struggles for Wickets: Former Indian Cricketer Offers Tips for Death Overs

New Delhi, April 1: Gujarat Titans’ fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took 1 wicket for 34 runs against Punjab Kings on Tuesday. Former Indian batsman Ambati Rayudu believes that Rabada needs to regain his yorker bowling skills to improve his performance in the death overs.

Rabada, who won the Purple Cap in IPL 2020, has faced challenges in recent seasons. In IPL 2023, he played 6 matches and took 7 wickets, followed by 11 wickets in 11 matches during IPL 2024. However, in IPL 2025, he managed only 2 wickets in 4 matches.

Rayudu stated on ESPN Cricinfo, “One thing we’ve noticed about Rabada over the past few years, similar to what Dale Steyn did, is that he bowls cross-seam outswingers, which resemble baseball pitches. Early in his career, when he bowled seam-up deliveries, he was very effective with his yorkers. But has he started relying too much on cross-seam bowling? This might be why he has lost his edge with yorkers.”

He added, “This could be the reason we haven’t seen him bowl as effectively in the death overs. However, early in his career, he was exceptional in those situations. Perhaps this is something he can bring back into his game.”

Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn shares a similar view. He believes Rabada is struggling to take wickets and has lost some sharpness with his yorkers in recent years. Steyn also compared Rabada’s bowling style to Marco Jansen, who took 1 wicket for 20 runs in the same match for Punjab Kings.
