Jharkhand Schools Closed Till 8 January Due to Cold Wave and Dense Fog

Ranchi: In view of the rising cold wave, severe chill, and dense fog in Jharkhand, the state government has ordered the closure of all schools until 8 January.

According to an order issued on Monday by the School Education and Literacy Department, all government, non-government, aided, unaided (including minority), and private schools across the state will remain closed from 6 to 8 January. This order applies to students from pre-nursery to class 12.

During these three days, no regular academic activities will be conducted in any school in the state. However, teachers and non-teaching staff in government schools will be present and carry out non-academic tasks. The department also clarified that if any school has scheduled pre-board exams during this period, the competent authority may decide on conducting the exams considering the prevailing weather conditions. This decision was made following the latest forecast issued by the Meteorological Centre, Ranchi.

The weather department has predicted that cold wave and ‘cold day’ conditions will continue in several districts of Jharkhand for the next two days. Districts including Palamu, Garhwa, Chatra, Koderma, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, and Hazaribagh are expected to witness minimum temperatures dropping to around 5 degrees Celsius.

Additionally, dense fog is expected in the northern and western parts of the state during mornings, reducing visibility to between 50 and 200 metres. The minimum temperature in districts such as Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Deoghar, and Palamu is likely to fall further by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours. Experts have warned that such weather conditions could adversely affect the health of young children.
