Jerry Jones Calls Losing Jourdan Lewis a Major Setback for Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys felt the absence of cornerback Jourdan Lewis keenly during the past NFL season after he moved to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Speaking openly about the impact, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones described losing Lewis as a “serious loss” that affected the team more than anticipated.

Impact of Losing the Nickel Defender

Jones said, “We lost the nickel, and it hurt us more than we thought. The nickel was a serious loss for us. It made a big difference not having [Lewis] out there. And, so, we have got to get better there.”

He explained that the Cowboys had hoped to rotate Lewis in and out in the nickel back position, but those plans did not work out as expected. “He wasn’t quite as suited to getting inside and being a nickel as we thought he would be. So that was a little planning that didn’t work out on the plan,” Jones added.

Jourdan Lewis’ Contribution to Jaguars

After signing a three-year, $30 million contract with Jacksonville in the offseason, Lewis quickly established himself as a key player. On the field, he has limited opponents to just 7.6 yards per catch, while also recording two interceptions and four pass breakups this season.

Beyond statistics, Lewis has emerged as a vital communicator in the Jaguars’ secondary, helping align the defence pre-snap and becoming one of the team’s leaders.

Setback for Jaguars Ahead of Postseason

Unfortunately for Jacksonville, Lewis was placed on injured reserve due to a foot injury sustained in the game against Denver. This means he will miss the postseason, a blow to the team given his leadership and on-field impact.

Jerry Jones’ candid remarks underline how significant Lewis’ departure has been for the Cowboys, highlighting the challenges they face in filling the gap left by the talented cornerback.
