New Delhi: England suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat in the 2025-26 Ashes series held in Australia. Former England opening batsman Jeffrey Boycott has strongly criticised England captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum following the loss.
Boycott Questions Team’s Approach and Leadership
Jeffrey Boycott pointed out that since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took charge of the Test team, England has failed to win any series against major teams like India or Australia. “Wins have come only against New Zealand, Pakistan, and West Indies,” he said, highlighting the lack of success against stronger opponents.
Boycott further accused Stokes and McCullum of ignoring accountability. He said, “McCullum’s philosophy is to play without worrying about the world. No one scolds them, no one is held responsible, and no one gets dropped. Because of this, foolish mistakes continue. If the coach and captain have no issues, why should players change, adapt or improve? People are fed up with this style of play.”
Calls for Change in Coaching and Discipline
Despite the series loss, Boycott observed that McCullum has shown no signs of changing his coaching methods. “He does not know when to stop or modify his routine. This kind of unchecked freedom without results is pulling England backwards. We have very talented cricketers but their skills are not being utilised properly. To progress to the next level, players need a different discipline in preparation and thinking. The board should involve former Ashes-winning players with the coach and captain for guidance,” Boycott added.
Both Stokes and McCullum have expressed their desire to continue in their respective roles. England’s next series is scheduled against New Zealand in June, giving the England and Wales Cricket Board ample time to review the team’s performance and strategies.
Australia’s Strong Performance Despite Missing Key Players
Australia won the Ashes convincingly despite missing key players like Josh Hazlewood and having Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon play only one match each. England appeared under pressure for most of the series, unable to challenge Australia’s dominance effectively.
This defeat raises questions about England’s current approach and the need for structural changes to revive their Test fortunes.
