Mumbai, June 23: Renowned lyricist, screenwriter, and poet Javed Akhtar is often in the spotlight for his thoughts and experiences. His interviews and anecdotes are widely followed on social media. Recently, an old video of him has gone viral, where he shares an intriguing experience from his early days in the film industry.
This video is from the popular show ‘Movers and Shakers,’ where Javed Akhtar recounted how, as a newcomer in the film industry, he had the opportunity to pitch his story to a producer.
He said, “Let me tell you an interesting story. When I first entered the film industry, I was not well-versed in its ways. I wrote a story that I felt was completely new and different. It took me a long time to secure an appointment with a producer. Back then, reaching a producer’s office was not easy.”
He continued, “I began narrating my story. I noticed that the producer was listening intently. I thought he liked it. After I finished, there was a moment of silence in the room. I asked him what he thought of the story.”
According to Javed Akhtar, the producer’s response was surprising. He said, “The producer acknowledged that the story was good but pointed out a risk. The risk was that he could not recall having seen such a story in any film before. Until now, this kind of story had not appeared in films.”
With a smile, he added, “At that moment, I realized that he actually wanted a story that had already been presented in another film. The demands of film producers are quite interesting. They seek entirely new stories that have been shown before.”
Javed Akhtar’s anecdote highlights the limited willingness in the film industry to take risks. He believes that even today, many producers prefer films with a proven track record of success, while new and experimental stories often face hesitation.
This viral video not only exposes audiences to the mindset of the film industry but also illustrates the ongoing challenge of balancing creativity with commercial success.
